A useful domain name needs a clear owner and a reliable renewal process. For a .eu domain, begin with eligibility and the identity of the domain holder, then arrange registration, DNS and hosting around that decision.
Check who will hold the domain
As checked on October 5, 2026, EURid’s eligibility rules cover citizens of EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway regardless of residence; other people resident in those countries; and undertakings or organisations established there, subject to the stated conditions. Verify your situation against the current rules before paying.
Record whether an individual or an organisation will be the holder. For a business project, have an authorised person confirm the intended legal entity and its details. A designer can help configure the site while the organisation retains the registration account and recovery access.
Availability is one check in choosing a name. It does not settle another party’s naming rights. For a potentially conflicting name, use qualified advice before building a brand around it.
Separate the services you are buying
EURid operates the registry; an accredited registrar handles registration and renewal for the customer. DNS directs services associated with the name, while a hosting provider stores the website. - Check the spelling and availability through EURid’s domain lookup, then verify the registrar through EURid.
- Compare the initial price, renewal price, taxes, support and transfer arrangements. Record which extras are optional.
- Use accurate holder details and an email address that you can keep working. Arrange account recovery and multifactor authentication where offered.
- Save the order, registrar name, account owner, renewal date and DNS provider in an access-controlled record.
Check the recorded holder after registration. EURid’s rules require accurate contact data; update changes through your registrar. Treat a verification notice promptly, using the registrar or registry’s known website to confirm the request.
Make renewal someone’s responsibility
Assign both a primary owner and a backup contact. Set reminders before the registrar’s payment deadline, confirm the payment method, and inspect the renewal confirmation. An enabled automatic-renewal setting still depends on successful payment and a functioning account.
A fictional ownership handover
A small studio’s designer leaves. The studio verifies that the organisation is the domain holder, moves account recovery to an authorised shared administrative process, records the DNS provider and confirms the next renewal. The website can stay on its existing host during this account handover.
If the name stops working, check registration status as well as hosting and DNS. EURid describes a 40-day quarantine process for affected domains. Contact the registrar promptly about the specific status and restoration options; recovery should be an exception to a planned renewal routine.
Prepare a transfer without losing services
First inventory the nameservers, website records and mail records, along with any DNSSEC arrangement. Ask both providers whether DNS hosting is included after the move and how continuity will be handled. A registrar transfer and a website migration are separate changes; schedule them deliberately.
Use EURid’s transfer-authorisation guidance to obtain the code through the registrar or My .eu. Keep it private and give it only to the intended new registrar. An account-login code is a different credential. Resolve a suspended status through the documented process before assuming a transfer can proceed.
After completion, confirm the holder, registrar, renewal arrangements, web access and email delivery. Keep the old service active until the required replacement services have passed those checks.
