Babson College will host two product design shows featuring an array of innovative designs by Babson MBA students and by collaborative teams of undergraduate students from Babson College, Olin College of Engineering, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
The Undergraduate Show is a series of new product presentations on December 10, 2009 in Babson's Sorenson Theater. Six teams of undergraduates from Babson, Olin, and RISD will present their ideas during a final, public course session. Their creative concepts include:
- A new kind of public drinking fountain that improves the user experience ergonomically and hygienically;
- A safely-attached bike mount for iPhones, allowing users to access information while riding;
- Convoco -- a signaling device that informs pedestrians of approaching cars from around curves and imminent blind spots;
- Flow Kiosk -- featuring a revolutionary, design-centric approach to street vending equipment with enhanced mobility, simplified setup/teardown, and a streamlined customer experience;
- A product solution that easily and conveniently preserves wine, sleekly designed with intuitive functionality; and
- C-Light -- developed by 90 degrees, a bedside storage and lighting solution for college students.
The teams developed their designs during a joint three-school, single-semester undergraduate course in product design and development.
The MBA Product Design Fair is on December 8, 2009 in Babson's Olin Hall Needham/Wellesley room. Five teams of Babson MBA students have developed and will display their new products including:
- An all-in-one transportation solution for day excursions to the beach;
- An innovative software tool that enhances the user experience, blending the best of traditional and digital methods in the current scrapbooking trend;
- An effective, easy-to-use, and low-cost phototherapy and warming medical device for jaundiced newborns in developing countries such as Vietnam;
- A modular, customized umbrella system that promotes a sense of community and individuality. Umbrella components are replaceable; and
- A dry umbrella: a fun and novel design that agitates a specially-coated canopy, efficiently shedding accumulated water pools.
The Babson MBA teams developed the designs during the graduate, single-semester product design and development course. Design-that-Matters and Essential Design were project sponsors, and neighboring Olin College of Engineering provided prototyping and engineering support.
