Two employees at 553 Superior St., where the letter was opened, are undergoing medical tests, and the Victoria Police Department is investigating. The building was evacuated and is being checked before staff will be allowed to return.

The primary responsibility for response to possible terrorist acts rests with local police, fire and ambulance services. Should a chemical, biological or nuclear event occur, the province has an emergency management structure that will be put into action.

The province is also working in partnership with the federal government, local governments and non-government organizations to strengthen its ability to respond to such events.

To date there have been no confirmed terrorist attacks in Canada, nor is there any known threat against Canadian institutions.
